SAN JOSE, Calif. - The Purdue softball team wrapped up its first weekend of spring break play with a loss to Big Ten rival Iowa at the N.I.S.T. in San Jose, Calif. The Boilermakers fell 8-0 in five innings and stand at 14-6-1 on the year.

Despite the loss, the Old Gold and Black did have some success at the plate. In the first inning, sophomore Angi Roembke led off the top of the order with a single down the left field line. Senior Lynne Tortorelli then put down a sacrifice bunt to move Roembke to second for the scoring position. After that, the Hawkeyes intentionally walked junior Katie Crabtree to avoid a Boilermaker score.

Freshman designated player Sara Hall was 2-2 and led off the bottom of the second inning with a very deep fly to center field to give the Old Gold and Black a runner on first. But it wouldn't be enough, as Iowa stepped up their game and Purdue succumbed, with a total of three errors.

On the mound, junior Meagan Dooley pitched 4.0 innings and allowed five hits and six runs. She walked one and struck out two while facing 18 batters.

Sophomore Leighann Burke came in at the top of the fifth for the relief, giving up one hit, and two runs. She walked one and struck out two while facing four batters.

The Boilermakers will return to the field on Thursday, March 15, when they take on California at 7 p.m. at the Capital Classic in Sacramento, Calif. They will follow that game with a game against Miami (Ohio) at 9 p.m.
