Women's Golf Finishes Seventh At Midwest Classic

Feb. 26, 2001

The Purdue women's golf team came away with an impressive third round, closing out a successful weekend at the Midwest Classic in Dallas, Texas. Competing against some of the nation's top teams, the Boilermakers finished in seventh place ahead of Big Ten rivals Northwestern, Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin.

"The team made big strides today," head coach Devon Brouse said, following conclusion of the third round. "This was the best of their three rounds at Dallas. Individually, you have to give credit to Heather Zielinski, who showed a lot of heart down the stretch."

Christy Rittenhouse led the Boilermakers with a three-round total of 230, shooting a 75 for the third round, matching her first round score. Rittenhouse also finished 11th overall in what was arguably the best tournament of her Purdue career. Caroline Laurens also shot 75 for the third round, finished with a total of 233, good enough for 20th place overall. Zielinski came back to shoot 76, 234 for the three rounds. Beth Hermes had the best tournament of her young college career, shooting a 79 for the third round and a 238 overall. Andrea Makauskas also finished with a 79 for the third round, finishing with a three-round total of 242.

The Boilermakers return to competition on March 12-14, as they travel to Austin, Texas to compete in the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational.
