RALEIGH, N.C. - The Purdue softball finished their second weekend of preseason tournament play with a final win over East Carolina, 3-0, at the Triangle Classic. The Boilermakers finished the weekend 5-1 and upped their season record to 9-2. They finish the tournament the champions of the gold consolation bracket.

"Today, our defense was good," said Purdue head coach Carol Bruggeman. "I'm very happy with the way we combined that defense with our offense. All in all, we had a great tourney."

The Boilermakers started off their defensive attack immediately with a three up, three down theory. The team received tremendous effort from Katie Crabtree who turned a great double play in the bottom of the second to end the inning and Lynne Tortorelli in center field with several key catches.

But the Old Gold and Black produced at the plate as well. Heidi Foster tallied a double that drove in Crabtree for the score. In the sixth inning, Laura Martin and Andrea Roush both scored off a hit by Keely Povlitz. Holly Streed also added a single to the effort.

The Boilermakers will return to the field in two weeks when they travel to Corpus Christi, Texas for the Islander Bash By The Bay, March 2-4. The `Bash' format is round robin on Friday and Saturday and a seeded bracket championship on Sunday. Purdue will play Louisiana Tech, Texas-Arlington, Loyola-Chicago and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
