RALEIGH, N.C. - The Purdue softball team defeated the UNC-Greensboro Spartans today, 3-0, at the Triangle Classic. The Boilermakers are 3-0 on the weekend and extend their season record to 7-1.
"We are right where we want to be," said Purdue head coach Carol Bruggeman. "Crabtree helped start our offense in the first inning and Jesse Jones had the first RBI, which was big. Playing well in the first and getting a good start is the key to keeping us right where we want to be."
At the plate for the Boilermakers, junior shortstop Katie Crabtree went 2-3 with two RBI and one run scored. Jones, the third baseman, went 2-3 on the game and tallied the first Boilermaker RBI in the bottom of the first inning. First baseman Heidi Foster went 1-2 and was walked once and second baseman Holly Streed was 1-2 with one run.
On the mound for Purdue, Meagan Dooley took the win and Leighann Burke tallied the save for her first of the season. Dooley pitched six innings for the shutout and allowed only four hits. She walked two and struck out seven, facing 22 batters. Dooley improves her personal record to 2-0. Burke pitched one inning, allowed no hits and no walks, and struck out two, while facing three batters.
The Boilermakers will return to the field for their first bracket play game tonight at 6 p.m. Their opponent is to be determined, as they will face the winner of a game still in progress.
