Purdue Women Swim Away With Victory Over Illinois In Quad Meet

MADISON, Wis. - The Purdue women's swim team came away from the Quad Meet, hosted by Wisconsin, with a victory over Illinois and losses to Wisconsin and Minnesota. The Boilermakers scores were as follows: Purdue 205, Illinois 147, Wisconsin 248.5, Purdue 113.5, Minnesota 215, Purdue 138. The women of the Old Gold and Black stand at 11-4 (4-4 Big Ten).

"This was the first time in four years that we've beat Illinois," Purdue head swim coach Cathy Wright-Eger said. "I think that we swam really well on Friday, but today we kind of backed off. I know that the whole team is tired and we need to get a lot of rest, but beating Illinois was our main goal going into the weekend and we did. Now we know what areas we need to work on for the Big Ten's so we'll be ready for Wisconsin and Minnesota."

The first race of the day was an exciting back-and-forth dual between Purdue's and Wisconsin's 200 freestyle relay teams. In the end, Wisconsin narrowly edged out the Boilermaker team of senior Missy Bromley, sophomores Kim Paradeise and Patricia Finnerty and senior Gyongyver Lakos for second place. They finished with a time of 1:37.50.

Freshman Autumn Sample produced a personal season-best time of 4:33.56 in the 400 individual medley for a seventh-place finish for the Boilermakers and juniors Kelly Mackus and Katie Mullarkey were close behind for ninth and tenth places. Their times were 4:34.46 and 4:36.52, respectively.

In the 100 free, senior Gyongyver Lakos was defeated for the first time this year with a second-place finish and a time of 52.65. Paradeise finished in 54.02 for seventh place and Bromley finished eighth with a time of 54.33.

In the hotly contested 200 backstroke race, Purdue's Lisa Dolansky came in 12th with a time of 2:08.97. Freshman Jenni Bean and senior Sarah Dougall came in 15th and 16th with times of 2:09.37 and 2:12.07.

Finnerty came away from the 100 butterfly race with a second-place finish with a time of 57.92. Sample and junior Karin Stender were not far behind, garnering sixth- and ninth-place finishes. Their times were 58.82 and 1:00.00.

Purdue's 500 free participants, Mackus, Paradeise and sophomore Laura Dill, finished 10th, 11th and 12th. They posted times of 5:08.63, 5:10.51 and 5:11.42, respectively.

Senior Brianna Reina finished fifth in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:22.60. Freshman Lindsay Kirchoff finished eighth with a time of 2:26.18 and junior teammate Ronica Rogalski finished ninth with a time of 2:27.30.

In the final event of the weekend, Purdue's 400 free relay team of Dolansky, Finnerty, Bromley and Lakos was defeated for the first time this season. The Boilermakers finished fourth with a time of 3:37.60.

Like their male counterparts, the Boilermaker women's diving team had its best weekend of the season. Juniors Molly MacFarlane and Kara Hajek finished second and third against Minnesota and first and second against both Illinois and Wisconsin. Sophomore Carrie Dougherty also placed fourth against Illinois and sophomore Heather Bachman finished 15th, overall. Point totals were as follows: MacFarlane 253.90, Hajek 250.95, Dougherty 206.00 and Bachman 186.25.

The Boilermakers will return to action when they head to Bloomington, Ind. for the Big Ten Champioships on Feb. 15.
