Purdue Men Produce Good Results After Day One Of Tri-Meet

MADISON, Wis. - The Purdue men's swim team completed day one of its tri-dual meet with Wisconsin and Minnesota with good results. The Boilermakers sit in second place after today's events. The point totals are as follows: Purdue 105, Wisconsin 77 and Minnesota 119, Purdue 66.

In the relays, Purdue's team of senior Juan Rodela, freshman Tamas Bessenyei, junior Donovan Crowley and senior Dave Weis finished second with a time of 1:31.62 for the 200 medley. In the 800 free relay, junior Javier Diaz, sophomore Jeremy Wright, freshman Will Seelbach and senior Matt Martin finished in 6:45.28 for second place.

Martin got out to a quick start in the 1000 free, but ended up with second place and a time of 9:19.51. Junior teammate Tom Drejer finished third with a time of 9:29.03. Freshman Garth Bringman finished with a time of 9:46.36 and eighth place.

Diaz brought home a first-place finish for the Boilermakers in the 200 free with a time of 1:39.91, while Wright finished in 1:41.16 and third place and Seelbach finished fifth with a time of 1:42.05.

In the 100 back, Rodela finished fourth with a time of 50.62 and seniors John Wakefield and Ian Caswell finished fifth and sixth with times of 52.08 and 52.78, respectively.

Bessenyei finished first in the 100 breast for the Boilermakers with a time of 55.76. Sophomore Mike Miller finished in 57.51 for fifth place.

Sophomore Tad Sayce was the first finisher for Purdue in the 200 fly with a fifth-place finish and a time of 1:53.45. Classmate Ehud Dekter finished with a time of 1:54.70 for an eighth-place finish.

Junior Jon Duncan placed fourth in the 50 free with a time of 21.21, while Weis finished seventh with a time of 21.33.

Diaz finished his night with a second-place finish in the 200 individual medley and a time of 1:52.83. Martin finished in 1:53.98 for fourth-place.

The Boilermaker diving team ended up with the best meet of the year with second- and third-place finishes against Wisconsin and fourth- and fifth-place finishes against Minnesota. Junior Kevin Young garnered second and fourth while freshman John Haglund scored the third and fifth places.

The Boilermakers will return to the pool Saturday at noon for the second day of the tri-dual meet.
