WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - John Allison more than tripled his career-high point total with 29 and tied a career-best five blocks as Purdue defeated Appalachian State 79-65 on Saturday.

Allison had never scored more than seven points during his first two years as backup center. Against the Moutaineers (2-5), he was 9-of-13 from the field and 11-of-15 from the free-throw line.

The Boilermakers (2-2) also got 16 points from Maynard Lewis as they won their first home game of the year.

Purdue led by eight at halftime and built that lead to as many as 16 points - its largest of the game. After that, the Moutaineers never got any closer than eight points.

Allison had three blocks and 12 points, including 6-of-8 from the free-throw line, in the first half. The Boilermakers had seven blocks in the half.

The score was tied six times in the first seven minutes before Maynard Lewis' 3-pointer put the Boilermakers ahead 16-13. Purdue never trailed after that and opened an 11-point lead.

The Moutaineers started strong, making six of their first 10 shots. They made just one of their next 10, before going on a 7-0 run to make the score 40-32 at the half.

Jonathan Butler and Brian Boxler led the Mountaineers with eight points each.
