CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The Purdue women's soccer team tied Wisconsin today, 2-2, in Champaign, Ill. in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament and took the Badgers to penalty kicks after two scoreless overtimes. The Boilermakers failed to advance into the second round, as Wisconsin won the penalty kicks period, 5-3.

Purdue ends its most successful season ever at 12-6-1, the Badgers stand at 15-5-1 and advance to meet the Michigan Wolverines tomorrow in the second round of the tournament.

"I think that our girls played the best they could have today," Purdue head coach Rob Klatte said. "We played with a lot of heart and intensity and after 120 minutes, a tie is a fair result. Unfortunately, with a tournament, it comes down to penalty kicks because someone has to advance."

The Boilermakers' first goal came at the 6:27 mark when freshman forward Annette Kent slipped into the box and freshman defender Krystal Pepper slotted the ball just right for Kent's seventh goal of the year.

The Badgers responded and Natalie Roedler was able to slip the ball into Allison Wagner for the score at the 33:47 mark.

Wisconsin then received a controversial call in the box and Purdue had the chance for another score with the penalty kick. Sophomore midfielder Jessica Baumhoff was able to capitalize for the Old Gold and Black at 34:34, putting them up, 2-1 at the half.

Purdue was able to hold onto its lead until the 72nd minute when Camille Flenniken took a free kick for Wisconsin and was able to keep the kick on the ground to roll right through the Boilermaker wall for the tying goal.

The Boilermakers were determined not to give up and ended the regulation time with the score tied at 2-2.

Wisconsin fought back with new-found force and had several close shots, but Purdue was able to hold on and take the game to the second overtime.

Purdue again, held on and after 120 minutes, the score was still tied at 2-2 with both teams preparing for the penalty kicks.

The Boilermakers decided on a goalie switch and entered junior keeper Sharon Sadowski for junior Elizabeth Boldt.

The Badgers led off the first kick and ended up making all five of their chances, while Purdue scored its first two shots, missed the third, and made the fourth. But it wasn't enough, as the Badgers scored five to the Boilermakers' three.

Purdue's season could still continue, however. The Old Gold and Black will look for the opportunity to receive an NCAA Tournament bid on Sunday, Nov. 5.
