WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue volleyball team fell to No. 8 Minnesota 15-9, 15-12, 15-5 Saturday in the IAF. With the loss the Boilermakers slip to 11-15 (3-13 Big Ten), while the Golden Gophers improve to 25-5 (14-2 Big Ten).
"Although we loss tonight, I was very pleased with our effort," head coach Jeff Hulsmeyer said. "We had outstanding performances from a lot of people and we played very well as a team. Our home fans were great and we played tough against a very talented Minnesota team."
Rookie Joanna Lowry paced the Boilermakers with 18 kills and made only one error on 35 attempts to hit at a clip of .486 (18-1-35). Senior junior Doud recorded 15 kills and hit at a clip of .424 (15-1-33). Junior Maegan Petersen also recorded double-figure kills (12) and hit at a clip of .486 (12-2-24).
Minnesota jumped out to an early 6-1 lead in Game 1. A kill from Petersen and two from Doud cut the lead to two points. The Golden Gophers then went scored four unanswered to bring the score to 10-4. Two errors from Minnesota, a kill from freshman Eryn Leach, a block from sophomore Tiffany Yoskey and a kill from Lowry put the Boilermakers within one. The Golden Gophers did not let up and went on to score the next five to win 15-9.
In Game 2, Purdue got out to a 5-1 lead. Minnesota scored four answered to knot the game 5-all. The Boilermakers answered with five of their own to take a 10-5 lead. The Golden Gophers responded with a 7-0 run to take a 12-10 lead. The Boilermakers made good on a Minnesota error and an ace from Doud to knot the score at the 12 mark. The Golden Gophers did not stop as they scored the next three for the win.
Purdue could not overcome an early 7-0 deficit to start Game 3. Minnesota went on to win 15-5.
The Boilermakers will travel to Northwestern and Wisconsin next weekend. Both matches will begin at 7 p.m. and will be broadcast live on WAZY 1410 AM and www.purduesports.com.
