Men's Swim Team Defeats Evansville For Final Time In Lambert Pool

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's swim team defeated the Evansville Purple Aces today in action at the Lambert Pool by a score of 144-106. The Boilermakers improve to 2-0.

"I thought that today was a really good meet for us," Purdue head men's swim coach Dan Ross said. "We performed very well despite missing our two top swimmers and several different guys were able to carry the weight. Some of the times we had today were great, we set a lot of new season-bests.. I'm especially happy for Tad (Sayce) with his new record."

And did the Boilermakers set records! Sophomore Tad Sayce recorded a new Lambert Pool record in the 100 butterfly with a time of 49.41. This also was the last time the 100 butterfly will ever be swum in Lambert, as Purdue will open the new Aquatics Center next season.

Finishing second in the 100 fly was junior Donovan Crowley with a time of 51.43.

In the 1000 freestyle, freshman Garth Bringman recorded a personal season-best time of 9:46.02 with freshman teammate Tony Ten Haagen finishing second with a time of 9:50.97.

In the 200 freestyle, sophomore Jeremy Wright finished first with a time of 1:42.47 for a new Purdue season-best time. Freshman Kyle Jackson slipped in just behind at 1:43.98.

In the 100 backstroke, senior Juan Rodela finished with a time of 52.56 for a first-place finish and a new Boilermaker top time for the year. Fellow senior John Wakefield finished third with a time of 54.82.

Freshman Tamas Bessenyei took the first place finish for Purdue in the 100 breaststroke with another Purdue season-besttime of 56.74. Senior Mike Miller finished second at 59.36.

Sayce was able to take first place for Purdue in the 200 butterfly as well, with a time of 1:53.57 for a season-best record. Sophomore Ehud Dekter finished second in the race with a time of 1:56.05.

In the 50 freestyle, senior Dave Weis took the top spot for a Purdue first place and a time of 21.23. Junior Jon Duncan took the second place spot with a 21.29.

Although exhibitioning their scores, Purdue's Duncan and Wright took the first and second place times for the 100 free. Duncan tallied a 46.43 while Wright tallied a 47.11.

Having both of their scores exhibitioned also, senior Ian Caswell and Rodela finished second and fourth in the 200 backstroke. Caswell improved his season top time by almost three seconds.

Bessenyei and sophomore Gui Rego finished first and second in the 200 breaststroke, only to also have their times exhibitioned. Bessenyei tallied a 2:03.51 while Rego slotted a 2:07.47.

In the 500 freestyle, Jackson finished first with an exhibition time of 4:39.44, while junior Tom Drejer finished second with a time of 4:40.52.

In the 200 individual medley, Bessenyei again took the first place with an exhibition time of 1:55.52. Boilermaker Ten Haagen took the third place spot for a time of 2:00.38.

In the relays, Purdue took both first place finishes. The 400medley team of Rodela, Bessenyei, Sayce, and Duncan dropped a time of 3:24.99 for a new season-best. The 400 freestyle relay team of Duncan, Sayce, Jackson, and Wright finished with a time of 3:09.52.

The Boilermakers will return to action on Nov. 10 when they travel to Iowa City, Iowa to take on the Hawkeyes. Meet time is set for 4 p.m. CST.
