WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's soccer team defeated the Butler Bulldogs today in their home territory, 3-1. Purdue improved to 11-6, while Butler fell to 6-8-1.

"We started a bit slow today," Purdue head coach Rob Klatte said. "We were lucky that Butler did not end up converting on its penalty kick. Ultimately our zest and individualism saw us through for our win today."

For the first time this season, Purdue found itself behind at the beginning of the game with some ground to make up. At 10:19, Butler's Amy Morrison scored her ninth goal of the year on a pass from Kara Bryan. The Boilermakers tried to fight back, but fought slightly too hard, as they received a foul in the box and Butler was given a penalty kick.

At the 20:52 mark, Kara Bryan attempted the kick for the Bulldogs, but came up short. Much to the advantage of the Boilermakers, Bryan's kick nailed the right post of the goal and deflected off, out of bounds for a Purdue throw-in.

This was Purdue's chance for a rally and it took full advantage. At the 28:15 mark, freshman midfielder Jenna Silverman converted on a solid pass from junior defender Tricia Henderson and was able to put the ball in the back of the net just out of the reach of Butler goalkeeper Amber Stauch. Silverman netted her second goal of the year, while Henderson tallied her first assist of the 2000 campaign.

At the half, the score was tied, 1-1, but Purdue didn't quit. Only 10 minutes into the second half, Henderson again found an opening on the right to freshman forward Annette Kent. Kent then lobbed the ball into junior midfielder Katie Redmond who was waiting in the box. Redmond drove the ball in for the score, her first of the year, at the 55:15 mark.

The final cap of the day was on a fast break for the Boilermakers when freshman forward Jennie Moppert took off down field and freshman forward Emily Whetter served the ball up, right to Moppert. Moppert dribbled a couple of times and lobbed the ball forward, just over the head of Butler's goalkeeper, Tricia Czerniak, for her seventh score of the season. The assist was Whetter's third of the season.

"I'm happy with the position that our win here, today, gives us for the possibility of a berth to the NCAA Tournament," Klatte said.

Purdue will look to build on its season's successes and advance that possibility when it hits the road for the final game of the 2000 season, this Friday, Oct. 27. The Boilermakers will take on SMU in Dallas at 7:30 p.m.
