VALPARAISO, Ind. - The Purdue soccer team held strong for its remarkable fifth win of the season, 7-1 over the Valparaiso Crusaders. The Boilermakers scored six of their seven goals in the second half, continuing their second half scoring tradition.
"I think that we played well today after calming down in the second half," head coach Rob Klatte said. "We increased the pressure, made them commit some turnovers and eventually wore them down with our numbers. Our depth continues to work well for us because it eventually gives us more chances to score."
And score the Boilermakers did. The first goal came at 11:33 when junior Tari St. John shot from the left off of a cross from junior Tricia Henderson. That would eventually be the only goal for either team during the first half.
Then at the 53:33 mark, Purdue scored again when St. John found freshman Courtney Coppedge on the left side, making it 2-0. Still determined, Valpo came back only five minutes later to narrow the gap to 2-1.
But the Boilermakers would prove prevail again, showing Valpo just why they are the No. 24 team in the country. Purdue went on a 5-0 scoring run within the last 18 and a half minutes, using that depth that they are famous for.
Four different Boilermakers scored on five goals, with six different Boilermakers adding assists to those goals. At 69:22, freshman Jennie Moppert and freshman Jenna Silverman took Valparaiso goalkeeper Rose Holtkamp two-on-one in the box with Moppert scoring the goal. Freshman Annette Kent also took an assist off the play.
Just one minute later, Kent chalked another one up for Purdue off of a double-assist from sophomore Jessica Baumhoff and Silverman.
At the 72:35 mark, it was Baumhoff's turn, scoring from the right side off of another double-assist from freshman Lindsey Haag and Moppert.
At the 75:35 mark, Kent took it to the net for the third time this season while at the top of the box from freshman Emily Whetter.
The final goal for the Boilermakers came at 87:16 when Silverman scored her first goal of the season from the left top of the goal box.
Purdue looks to continue its winning streak when the traveling to Nebraska to take on the Cornhuskers at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 10. -P-
