WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's soccer team picked up its third Big Ten win of the season with a 2-1 decision over Michigan State in West Lafayette today. The Boilermakers' conference victory total eclipses the two wins they recorded last season in their inaugural Big Ten campaign.
"We played very intelligently today and demonstrated good organization defensively," Purdue head coach Robert Klatte said. "We came out focused and played well in the first half. We let them dictate play at the beginning of the second half, but then we were able to slow it down the last 15 to 20 minutes. This is a very good victory for us because we were able to take the lead, build it and keep it."
Scoring first for the Boilermakers was sophomore midfielder Jessica Baumhoff, who deposited a free kick from 28 yards out at the 15:18 mark in the first half. The next tally was recorded by freshman forward Jennie Moppert, who scored off a centering pass from classmate Annette Kent inside the 18-yard box at the 26:22 mark. Moppert's game-winning strike was her fifth of the season.
Michigan State, down 0-2 at halftime, took advantage of a hand ball called in Purdue's box early in the second half. The Spartans' Andrea Sied scored Michigan State's lone goal on the ensuing penalty kick, passing the ball into the lower left corner of the net beyond Boilermaker goalkeeper Elizabeth Boldt.
Boldt, a junior, made three saves en route to recording her eighth win of the season between the pipes. Sara Kloosterman suffered the loss for the Spartans.
Purdue is now 8-3 overall and 3-2 in the Big Ten. With the loss, Michigan State dropped to 7-3-1 and 2-2 in the Big Ten.
The Boilermakers will return to action on Friday, Oct. 6, when they host Minnesota. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
