WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's soccer team tallied yet another shutout win today as it defeated Big Ten opponent Northwestern 1-0 at the Purdue Varsity Soccer Complex. The win brings Purdue to 6-2 (1-1 Big Ten) on the season and drops Northwestern to 2-4-1 (1-1 Big Ten). This is also Purdue's fourth shutout of the season.
"We played hard and were finally able to take advantage on that last corner kick," Purdue head coach Rob Klatte said. "Courtney (Coppedge) did a good job of putting the ball in the back of the net. I think the fact that we have such a deep bench is what carried it through today. Creating opportunities like the ones at the end is what we have to continue to do for the rest of the season."
The Boilermakers' only goal came in the 89th minute, when sophomore Katie Redmond took the corner kick for Purdue and found freshman Courtney Coppedge in the middle of the penalty box for a header. Coppedge chalked up her fourth goal of the year, and Redmond added her second assist of the year.
Purdue outshot Northwestern 9-6 in the first half and 10-4 in the second half. Purdue goalkeeper Elizabeth Boldt added five saves to her total, Northwestern goalkeeper Erin Ekeberg fended off nine Boilermaker shots.
"Today was definitely a difficult day for us," Klatte said. "There are no more easy games from here on out. The Big Ten is going to be tight this year, and we've only gotten a taste of it with Michigan and Northwestern. Right now our goal is to work hard, and I think that's what we're good at."
The Boilermakers continue the conference season on the road next weekend. Purdue will take on Ohio State on Friday, Sept. 22, at 5 p.m. in Columbus and Penn State on Sunday, Sept. 24, at 1 p.m. in University Park.
