WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's soccer team lost to Big Ten rival Michigan 2-1 today in double overtime. The loss dropped the Boilermakers to 5-2-0 (0-1 Big Ten), while the Wolverines improved to 2-3-0 (1-0 Big Ten) with the victory.
"I thought that we played very well today," Purdue head coach Rob Klatte said. "Michigan is a really great team who pushed us to the limit and we fought hard the whole way. We created a lot of opportunities and had many excellent shots. It was a hard-fought game and all the girls should feel good about the way they played. We need to stay pumped up and be ready for another game on Sunday."
The Boilermakers got off to a slow start in the first half and were outshot by the Wolverines, 8-5. With less than four minutes left in the first half, Michigan scored its first goal and took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Purdue began the second half on the attack. And in the 62nd minute, freshman forward Annette Kent received a pass from freshman forward Jennie Moppert and rifled a shot past the Michigan goalkeeper, tying the score. It was Kent's fifth tally of the season and Moppert's second assist.
The Boilermakers and Wolverines continued to battle throughout regulation time, but neither could find the back of the net.
During the first overtime, Purdue dominated the field. The Boilermakers outshot Michigan 6-3 and produced three corner kicks to Michigan's one. But the Boilermakers could not find a way to score, and the nail-biter continued to the second overtime.
The sudden-victory goal finally came for Michigan in the 117th minute, when Abby Crumpton found Stephanie Chavez in front of the goal. Chavez deposited the delivery past Purdue junior goalkeeper Elizabeth Boldt, who had turned away 13 of Michigan's previous 14 shots.
Purdue will return to action at the Varsity Soccer Complex on Sunday, Sept. 17 at 1 p.m., when it hosts the Northwestern Wildcats.
