WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Donnie Fellows, a senior on the Purdue men's cross country team, won the Indiana Intercollegiates today in Bloomington, Ind. Fellows finished the 8,000-meter course in 22:50.86, 10 seconds ahead of the runner-up, John Nqure of Huntington College. Fellows was best in the field of 200.
"We ran very well today," Purdue coach Mike Poehlein said. "I was really happy with Donnie Fellows. That was one of the fastest times ever run on that course. Our guys grouped together much better than they did last week. They handled the traffic and the heavy course."
As a group, Purdue scored 83 points to finish third out of 22 teams, all from the state of Indiana. The host Hoosiers won the meet with 59 points, while Ball State placed second with 70.
Behind Fellows, junior Chris Boesch and senior Tito Downer finished 12th and 13th, respectively. Rounding out the Boilermaker finishers were sophomore Toby Buechner (52nd), freshman Ryan Johnson (61st) and junior Scott Bush (63rd).
The Boilermakers' next meet is the Roy Griak Invitational to be hosted by Minnesota on Saturday, Sept. 22.
