WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's soccer team fell for the first time this season, 4-1 to the third-ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers today. The Boilermakers' record now stands at 5-1-0 heading into Big Ten play.
"We really played well in the first half of the game today," head coach Rob Klatte said. "We just need to stay calm and stretch out in the second half. I think that we'll do well in the Big Ten season if we continue to play like we did today. Playing a team as good as Nebraska was definitely a learning experience for us, and it does prepare us for the conference schedule."
The Boilermakers' lone goal came at 29:38 when freshman Courtney Coppedge scored off of a penalty kick after being taken down in the box. Coppedge's goal tied it up and at the half, the Boilermakers held the Huskers 1-1. It was Coppedge's third goal of the season.
Despite pressure from the tough Nebraska offense, Purdue goalkeepers Elizabeth Boldt and Sharon Sadowski did well for themselves. Boldt played 49 and a half minutes, saved two shots on 13 total Husker shots and allowed only one goal. Sadowski finished out the game, saved five shots on 13 more Nebraska shots and allowed three goals.
"The two goals that they scored in less than a minute were excellent shots," Klatte said. "There wasn't anything Sharon could've done to help that. She played very well today against a very strong team."
The game also proved to be very physical, as Boilermakers Jennie Moppert and Jessica Baumhoff were each issued yellow cards. Baumhoff was later issued a red card and ejected from the game.
Scoring for Nebraska came from Meghan Anderson (2), Christine Latham (1), and Christy Harms (1), with assists by Becky Preston and Lindsey Greenwood on the second and fourth goals.
The Boilermakers will return to action this weekend to start the Big Ten season when they host Michigan at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15, and Northwestern at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17.
