Sickler Brings Rain, Boilers Rained Out

May 9, 2000

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Boilermakers' final home game of the season was cut short by a torrential downpour today, as Purdue and Chicago State made it through 3 ? innings before the weather took over and wrapped things up. The Boilers had a 6-0 lead at the time but couldn't get out of the fourth inning quick enough to make the game count. Purdue's record remains at 31-20 for the season, despite hitting the Cougars hard.

Despite playing only three full innings, there were still two interesting stories on the day. The first came when Cougar-starter Jake McIntyre, a senior at Chicago State, faced his brother in Purdue-freshman Nick McIntyre. With two runners on, Jake challenged his younger sibling with a fastball, which was in turn laced to right center field for a triple and two RBI. Nick opened the game up and gave Nate Sickler a chance to hit his 11th home run of the season. The shot went over the left field fence and gave new meaning to the phrase "that bomb brought rain," as the showers started shortly after.

With Purdue up 6-0 and Travis Dorsch holding the Cougars scoreless, the game was brought to an end by thunderstorms. The Boilers will look to schedule an additional home game on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. If they cannot schedule an additional game, the next contest will be against Minnesota in their four game set this weekend.
