Boilers Pick Up 4-3 Win Over Michigan

April 8, 2000

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team clinched an important conference win Saturday, as they defeated Michigan 4-3. Head coach Mat Iandolo was pleased with the victory.

"It was great to see them come back and win after losing to Notre Dame on Wednesday," Iandolo said. "This win will set the scene for our upcoming stretch of matches to get a high seed in the Big Ten tournament and to get a team bid for the NCAA tournament."

Purdue gained a 1-0 advantage over the Wolverines in doubles action. At the No. 1 position, the 20th-ranked duo of Jennifer Embry and Shannon Taheny handed Danielle Lund and Sandra Fuzesi an 8-4 loss. At the No. 3 spot, Melissa Iqbal and Erika Quebe pulled off an 8-4 victory over Joanne Musgrove and Alison Sinclair.

Taheny, who often plays her best tennis in the high-pressure third set, quickly stopped Lund 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 2 singles position. Lynsey Fick followed her example at the 6, by knocking off Sinclair 6-3, 6-4. Embry and Lisa Walgenbach both faced a tiebreaker to win at the No. 1 and 5 spots, respectively.

"I thought they both did a good job at playing to win on the big points in those two matches," Iandolo says. "They both stepped up their aggressiveness in the tie breakers and got the wins."

Purdue's scheduled match against Michigan State on Sunday was cancelled earlier in the week due to injuries on the Spartan team. The next action for the Boilermakers will be on April 15 when they travel to Ohio State to meet the Buckeyes at 11 a.m.
