April 2, 2000 -

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team bounced back from a loss on Saturday, to defeat No. 68 Southern Methodist 5-2 on Sunday. With the win, the Boilermakers improved to 7-9 on the season. Head coach Mat Iandolo was pleased with the victory.

"I am very pleased with how we competed against SMU," Iandolo said. "We came back from a tough loss to LSU, and got a solid win over a ranked team."

The Boilers were able to win four of six singles matches. At the No. 1 position, senior Jennifer Embry handed Dee Dee Herring a 6-1, 6-2 loss. Freshman Melissa Iqbal defeated Katie Pruett 6-0, 6-3 at the No. 4 spot. To round off action, junior Lisa Walgenbach knocked off Lindsey Bruce 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 at No. 5, and at No. 6, sophomore Lynsey Fick picked up a 6-4, 6-0 win over Alissa Scott.

Purdue returns home this week for a mid-week match against Notre Dame, and weekend matches against Big Ten foes, Michigan and Michigan State. If the weather conditions allow, all events will be held on the Varsity Courts on the West Lafayette campus.
