WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - Michigan's youngsters finally wore out Purdue's veterans.
Freshmen LaVell Blanchard and Jamal Crawford scored 11 of Michigan's 12 points in the second overtime, lifting the Wolverines to an 88-86 victory over the poor-shooting Boilermakers Saturday.
Blanchard finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds, including a put-back basket that gave Michigan the lead at 87-86 with 20 seconds to go.
Carson Cunningham then missed a shot with 12 seconds left and immediately fouled Crawford, who hit one of two free throws for the final margin. Two shots by Purdue's Maynard Lewis were off the mark in the closing seconds, preserving the victory for Michigan (10-3, 1-1).
Crawford added 19 points for the Wolverines, including six in the second overtime.
Purdue (9-5, 0-1), which shot 37 percent for the game, had to come from behind both in the final seconds of regulation and the first overtime.
A rebound basket by Mike Robinson tied the game 67-67 at the end of regulation, then three free throws by Cunningham - who was fouled by Crawford on a 3-point attempt with 5 seconds left - tied it 76-76 at the end of the first extra period.
Senior Brian Cardinal, who led Purdue with 21 points, put the Boilermakers ahead three times in the second overtime, including a 3-point basket for an 85-83 lead with 1:55 remaining. Crawford then hit one free throw, and sophomore Chris Young tied the game with another foul shot with a minute to go. Purdue's final lead was at 86-85 on a free throw by Cardinal before the go-ahead basket by Blanchard.
Cardinal made his first start since he broke his left thumb a month ago, and his 11 points in the second half helped Purdue build leads of up to eight points. Michigan regained the lead on a rebound basket by Josh Asselin and neither team led by more than three points the rest of regulation.
In the first half, a pair of 3-point goals by Blanchard helped the Wolverines to a 28-19 lead before Purdue rallied within 36-32 at halftime.
Senior Jaraan Cornell, Purdue's leading scorer for the season, continued a recent shooting slump, missing all five attempts from the field in the first half and finishing 4-of-14 with 14 points.
