Men's Swim Team Falls to Northwestern

Dec. 22, 1999

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The 23rd-ranked Purdue men's swimming team (3-1, 1-1) fell to the Northwestern Wildcats 129-159 on Wednesday in Honolulu, Hawaii. Competing without the diving team, the Boilers missed out on any portion of the 26 points allotted in the diving competition.

"We're pretty beat up," coach Dan Ross said. "We've only been here for three days and haven't quite acclimated ourselves to the time zone and jet lag. This meet was really tough on us as a team, but I think it was important to do because it helps with our mental toughness."

The Boilermakers did have a number of event winners including Tommy Drejer in the 1000 free, Juan Rodela in 100 back, Dan Kleber in the 100 and 200 fly, Javier Diaz in the 100 free and Gui Rego in the 200 breast. The 200 free relay of Jon Duncan, David Weis, Kevin Cornehl and Juan Rodela narrowly touched out Northwestern in the final event.

Purdue will continue their winter training over the holidays before resuming action on January 3, at the Rainbow Classic.
