Nov. 13, 1999

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The men's swimming and diving team defeated Iowa 151-86 in their first Big Ten meet of the season Saturday. The Boilermakers (4-0, 1-0) won nine of the 12 events, which included placing the top three swimmers in the 1000 and 500 free and 200 breast.

Individually Purdue had four swimmers set season marks for the team, Matt Martin in the 1000 free (9:17.18), Tad Sayce in the 200 IM (1:52.48), Juan Rodela in the 200 back (1:52.38) and Tommy Drejer in the 500 free (4:35.14). The free relay team of Jon Duncan, Kevin Cornehl, Jeremy Wright and Javier Diaz also set a season best with a time of 3:06.32.

"I happy with this whole weekend," coach Dan Ross said. "This was a tough stretch for us because last night we had our meet in Michigan and had to regroup here this morning. The team handled the adversity of traveling and recuperating for today very well. This is an important win for us. Our first Big Ten victory against an Iowa team that is much improved is a real positive for us."

The Boilermakers do not compete again until December 22, when they take on Northwestern in Honolulu, Hawaii.
