Boilermakers' Soccer Falls to Hawkeyes

Oct. 15, 1999

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's soccer team fought hard for 90 minutes against Iowa, but in the end it was the Hawkeyes that escaped town with a 5-3 victory in front of 250 fans at the Purdue Varsity Soccer Complex. With the loss, the Boilermakers, in 10th-place in the Big Ten, have now dropped seven straight games to fall to 6-8-0 overall (1-7 in the Big Ten), while fourth-place Iowa improves to 9-5-0 (5-3-0 Big Ten).

"I thought we played hard today," Purdue coach Rob Klatte said after the match. "The effort was there, but we keep making little mistakes that our opponents seem to make us pay for. And today that was the case."

Purdue jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 3:23 into the match on a goal by sophomore midfielder Tari St. John. After controlling the ball outside the 18-yard line, junior midfielder Sara Field bent a ball around the defense that St. John was able to head past the Iowa keeper for her four goal of the season.

Iowa, which came into the contest leading the Big Ten with 98 points this season (32 goals, 34 assists), tied the score at 1-1 on a goal by Laren Kriner at 18:27. Jenny Sturm passed the ball into space behind the Purdue defense and Kriner was able to run onto it and beat Purdue's goalkeeper Jocelyn Cavalier.

The high-powered Hawkeyes took the lead at 22:59 of the first half and never looked back on an unassisted goal by Lindsey Wolman. Following a throw in for the Hawkeyes near the Purdue touchline, the ball was loose inside the box, and Wolman was able to trap it, turn, and fire for the score.

Iowa added another goal before the half to make the halftime score 3-1, as Kriner scored her second of the contest. After a defensive lapse by Purdue, Iowa was able to counter and Kriner made them pay with the goal. Chrissy Howard was credited with the assist.

To make matters worse for the Old Gold and Black in the first half, sophomore defender Tricia Henderson received a red card of ejection at 38:30 for taking an Iowa attacker out from behind. In the process, though, Henderson stopped a possible goal from the Hawkeyes. As a result of the rejection, the Boilers had to play a player down the rest of the contest. Also, Henderson will miss the Sunday's contest with Illinois.

In a second half scorefest, Iowa notched its fourth goal at 47:54 on Wolman's second tally of the contest. After a Purdue defensive lapse in its on third of the field that resulted in a two-on-one attack for Iowa on the Purdue keeper, Wolman fired a shot that Cavalier was able to make a diving save on, but the ball went right back to Wolman, and she was able to slide it past the fallen Purdue keeper.

Purdue then was able to close the gap to 4-3 on back-to-back goals in a span of ten minutes. Sophomore midfielder Kate Queen scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season at 47:54 and fellow sophomore midfielder Rebecca Broering received a pass from Karah Henderson and notched her third tally on the season at 57:00 to cut the lead to one.

That would be as close as Purdue would get, as the Hawkeyes added two goals late in the contest to make the final 6-3. The Big Ten's leading scorer Stephanie Lynch scored her 15th of the season at 75:15 from Joni Anderson, and Kate Walse at 80:46 from Meredith Taylor to close out the tallies in this high scoring affair.

"We had a lot of good individual efforts out on the field today," Klatte said. "Now we need to make that into a solid team effort and take it to the Illini on Sunday."

The Boilermakers will host Illinois at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the Varsity Soccer Complex.
