Purdue Takes Chicago by Storm

Sept. 6, 1999

CHICAGO, Ill. - The Purdue women's soccer team ran its winning streak to three games on Monday afternoon with a 5-2 thumping of the DePaul Blue Demons. With the high-powered elevated trains running in the background of the Blue Demon's stadium, nestled in downtown Chicago, the high-powered Purdue attack took center stage equally the most goals in school history. Last year, Purdue tallied five scores against Eastern Illinois. With the win, the Boilers have now won three in a row to push their record to 3-1 on the season. For the entire year last year, Purdue only won four matches.

"I was overall pretty happy with our performance today," Purdue coach Rob Klatte said. "I thought we applied good pressure to DePaul and created some good scoring opportunities for ourselves in the box. I think, now being in our second year, we are starting to grow more as a team. When you do this, good things start happening. Right now I think that is the case for us. I just hope we can continue to improve and build off these games."

History was also made on Monday for the Boilers, as sophomore Kate Queen tallied two goals. That is the first time a Boilermaker has scored twice in one contest. The Columbus, Ohio, native now leads the second-year program with three goals in four games.

Purdue wasted no time making a statement as they scored 1:18 in the match on a penalty kick by Queen. The goal was set up by sophomore Ashley Fritz who was tripped in the box after making a run down the sidelines resulting in the penalty shot.

DePaul retallied with a goal at 2:49 by Andrea Toth to tie the score at 1-1. Purdue starting goalie junior Sharon Sadowski, who was caught off her line, got crossed up on the play and Toth volleyed it over her head for the equalizer.

At the 24:53 mark of the first half, the Blue Demons took the lead on a goal by Jeanette Croce. Purdue's defense tried to set up an off sides trap, but was unsuccessful.

Purdue tied the score at 2-2 on a goal by sophomore Rebecca Broering. Sophomore Katie Redmond, who led the streaking Broering with a pass into the middle of the box which she deposited in the back of the net, was credited with the assist.

Sophomore Tara McCarthy scored what proved to be the game-winner at the 40:33 mark in the first half with a header in the box beating the DePaul keeper in the lower left corner of the goal.

The Old Gold and Black played keep away and tallied two more scores in the second half to put the game out of reach. Redmond, off a throw in from junior Sara Field, turned and rifled a shot over the outstretched arms of the keeper at the 53:48 to register her first goal of 1999. The final Purdue goal came at 79:30 when Queen dribbled a few of the Blue Demon defenders and blasted a shot past the keeper.

Efficiency and defense for the Boilers were keys, as Purdue held the Blue Demons to just four shots on goal, while Purdue tallied 20. The Boilers also recorded 10 corner kicks, compared to only one for the Blue Demons.

Purdue will now prepare for its home opener and the first-annual Boilermaker Challenge Cup this weekend, Sept. 10 and 12. The Boilermakers, along with Central Florida, Deleware and Wright State make up the '99 field. Purdue entertains Central Florida on Friday at 4 p.m. and Deleware on Sunday on 2 p.m. Purdue ended last year with a three-match home winning streak.

"This coming weekend is pretty big for us," Klatte said. "With the tournament and Notre Dame weekend, the campus will be packed with people. I hope to have great crowds at all the games and give the fans something to cheer about."
