Sept. 4, 1999
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Purdue women's soccer team exploded for three goals on Saturday night to shutout the Butler Bulldogs 3-0 in front of 520 fans at William F. Kuntz Stadium. This is the second year in a row the Boilermakers have shutout their intrastate rivals, as they blanked the Bulldogs 2-0 last season in West Lafayette. With the win, Purdue improves to 2-1 on the season, while Butler fell to 0-2.
With the 1999 Indianapolis Sky Concert Fireworks going on in the background of the stadium, the Boilermakers were making fireworks of their own inside, as they took it to their rivals from the start. Purdue controlled the ball in the midfield, intimidated Butler on the defensive third and ran around them on the offensive third throughout the match.
"I was extremely pleased with our performance tonight," Purdue coach Rob Klatte said. "We had very good ball control and really stretched out their defense. We won the loss balls, denied them possession and really took it to them for the full 90 minutes."
The Old Gold and Black tallied its first score at the 18:57 mark of the first half when freshman Jessica Baumhoff, making her first collegiate start, sent a free kick into the penalty box. The ball was controlled by junior Sara Field who led a streaking Tari St. John, a sophomore, who deposited the ball into the back of the net for her first goal of 1999.
Purdue would add another score at the 23:15 mark in the first half, as senior Jennie Schurr played a ball into open space that St. John ran onto. Then St. John, a Brookfield, Wis., native, cut inside the defense leaving a perfect pass to sophomore Ashley Fritz at the 18. The Carmel, Ind., native, playing in front of many friends and family, promptly beat the Bulldog keeper in the lower right corner for her first collegiate goal.
The Boilermakers would finish off the scoring at the 81:50 mark when Baumhoff sent a 25-yard blast over the outstretched arms of the Bulldog keeper to make the score 3-0. Sophomore Tricia Henderson, playing in her first contest of the fall due to a leg injury, was credited with the assist.
For the match, Purdue out shot the Bulldogs tallying 10 shots, five on goal, to seven for Butler, but just two on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Jocelyn Cavalier was perfect in goal registering three saves and recording her fourth collegiate shutout.
The Boilermakers will have little time to enjoy this win, as they will travel to Chicago on Monday, Sept. 6, for a showdown with the DePaul Blue Demons at 4 p.m. Last year, Purdue blanked DePaul 1-0 in West Lafayette.
