WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's soccer team saw its six-match winning streak come to a stop as they were beaten by Michigan State 3-0 at Old College Field on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Boilermakers fall to 6-2 overall (1-1 Big Ten), while Michigan State improves to 2-3-3 overall.
"I thought for the most part we played pretty well," Purdue coach Rob Klatte said. "We gave up two goals early on counter attacks and that really put us behind the eight ball. Those two scores really took the wind out of our team."
Michigan State's Heidi Lutz scored her first college career goal and the game-winning goal for the Spartans at 8:41. Jessica Moorman assisted on this goal. Melissa Jannetta faced Purdue sophomore goalkeeper Jocelyn Cavalier with a penalty kick and scored for the Spartans at 22:18. Gina Dawson scored the last goal for the Spartans at 48:03, it was assisted by Laura Montecillo.
Moorman led the squads with three shots on goal, while Purdue sophomores Rebecca Broering and Katie Redmond had two a piece for the Old Gold and Black. Cavalier had five stops for the Boilermakers. Spartan goalkeeper Sara Kloosterman also recorded five saves with her first shutout win of the season and her third shutout overall.
Purdue will now try and regroup and get ready for next weekend, as they play host to Penn State on Friday, Sept. 24 at 4 p.m. and Ohio State on Sunday, Sept. 26 at 1 p.m. at the Purdue Varsity Soccer Complex.
