Women's Cross Country Comes Away With Victory At Indiana Intercollegiates

Sept. 17, 1999

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's cross country team raced their way to a first-place tie in this weekend's Indiana Intercollegiates held at Indiana State University. The Boilers improved greatly on last seasons fifth-place finish at this meet, and showed a great deal of promise for the weeks ahead.

"I was very pleased with our performance today," head coach Ben Paollilo says. "Our times and our overall performance were vastly improved from last year, and I think that there is a great deal of talent on this team"

The Boilermakers finished the day with a team total time of 1:32:03.41, leaving them with a total of 43 -points. Purdue defeated Big Ten rival Indiana in the meet, who finished third with a total of 60-points. Leading the way for the Boilermakers was freshman Teresa Kamleiter. Kamleiter finished the course in 18:03.31, earning a team-high third-place finish. Taking advantage of strength in numbers, Purdue's Ann Stechschulte crossed the line in fourth, less than eight-seconds after Kamleiter. Stechschulte finished the race in 18:10.85, averaging 5:51 per mile. Rounding out the top-25 for the Boilers was Barbara Wenger who finished ninth (18:28.78), Nicole Nigh, who crossed the line with a time of 18:36.48 for a 12th-place finish, Kim Snyder finished 15th (18:43.99), Jesse Wilder followed with a 16th-place finish (18:47.84) and Heather Hartshorne closed out the top-competitors with a 24th-place finish (19:02.80).

"I am extremely please with the way that we ran," Paollilo says. "We had seven people in the top-25, and the low separation was outstanding among our athletes. Theresa really came through for us, and Kim Snyder, who is a junior walk-on and in her first year with us, ran very well."

The Boilers will return to West Lafayette for two weeks, before returning to action Oct., 1, at the Iona Meet of Champions.
