WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's soccer team ran its winning streak to five games on Sunday afternoon with a 4-1 victory over the Delaware Blue Hens in the final game of the first-annual Boilermaker Challenge Cup. The Boilermakers now stand at 5-1 on the season, as they head into Big Ten play starting next weekend. In the two games the Old Gold and Black played this past weekend, they outscored their opponents 8-3. They defeated Central Florida 4-2 on Friday.
"This is a good win for our team, as we head into Big Ten action next weekend," Purdue coach Robert Klatte said. "Today our focus was a little low, but we got good play from our defense and from midfielder Rebecca Broering. She played at another level today and that really lifted our team. Hopefully we can build from this weekend and get ready to play in the Big Ten."
Purdue jumped on the board first at 26:45 of the first half on a goal by Broering, her second of the season. After winning the ball at midfield, sophomore Kate Queen lofted a pass over the defense that Broering ran onto and blasted a shot over the Blue Hens goalie into the back of the net. Broering had another golden scoring opportunity in the first half at the 18-yard line, but her shot hit the cross bar.
In the second half, the Blue Hens responded with a goal of their own at 62:43 by Brittany Campbell to tie the score at 1-1.
Purdue senior Jennie Schurr tallied her first collegiate score at 64:53 when she lifted a ball into the box from about 30 yards out that bounced over the Delaware keeper into the net. Sophomore Tara McCarthy notched her third game in two games at 81:53, as the Richfield, Minn., native trapped a nice pass from fellow sophomore Tari St. John in the box and slid the ball into the net.
The Boilermakers added another tally before it was over, as freshman Jessica Baumhoff notched her second goal of the season at 87:22, assisted by sophomore Katie Redmond.
For the match, Purdue out-shot Delaware 9-5, with the Boilers holding a 5-2 advantage on shots on goal. Purdue recorded five corner kicks to the Blue Hens two. Purdue sophomore goalkeeper Jocelyn Cavalier had one save while playing the full 90 minutes.
At the conclusion of the four-game tournament, five Purdue players were named the All-Tournament team. Tara McCarthy, Tricia Henderson, Jennie Schurr, Karah Henderson and Tari St. John represented the Boilers on the All-Tournament team. Karah Henderson was honored as the Defensive Most-Valuable Player, while teammate Tari St. John was selected the Offensive MVP.
Purdue takes to the road next weekend to start Big Ten play in Chicago. On Friday, Sept. 17, the Boilermakers play Northwestern at 4 p.m. On Sunday, Sept. 19, the Old Gold and Black clash with Michigan State at 1 p.m.
