IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - Katie Douglas drove for a key basket in overtime, then intercepted Iowa's final inbounds pass Sunday as No. 3 Purdue escaped the Hawkeyes' upset bid with a 71-69 victory.
Purdue (11-1 overall, 3-0 Big Ten) scored the first six points of overtime and held on after Iowa had tied the score at 63 with .5 seconds left in regulation on a 5-foot turnaround shot by Amy Herrig, who scored 23 points and grabbed a school-record 25 rebounds.
Two straight baskets by Herrig in overtime drew Iowa (7-7, 2-2) to 69-67 with 1:42 left, but Douglas answered with her driving shot to make it 71-67. Freshman Lindsey Meder hit a 10-foot jump shot to pull the Hawkeyes within two. They got one last chance when they were awarded possession on a jump ball under their basket with .3 seconds remaining.
Iowa's inbounds play broke down, however, and Douglas intercepted the pass.
Stephanie White-McCarty led Purdue with 16 points, but made only 6-of-17 shots. Douglas and Kelly Komara each scored 12 points, Ukari Figgs 11 and Camille Cooper 10, including the first two baskets of overtime.
Meder scored 14 points for Iowa, which has eight freshmen among its 11 players. Herrig's 25 rebounds broke the previous school record of 23 by Cindy Haugejorde in 1977 and 1978.
Despite the Hawkeyes' youth, Purdue never could shake Iowa, which trailed by 11 points in the second half and by four with less than 30 seconds remaining.
Purdue missed 18 of its first 22 shots, then went on a 12-0 run that included two 3-pointers by Komara to take a 23-18 lead. The Boilermakers led 26-21 at halftime and opened a 49-38 lead midway through the second half.
Iowa responded with a 13-2 run that freshman Leah Magner capped with a 3-pointer for a 51-51 tie.
Purdue was leading 60-56 when Iowa made five free throws - three by Meder and two by Herrig - to go up 61-60 with 17 seconds left.
White-McCarty slipped between Herrig and Jerica Watson for a basket, got fouled and made the free throw for a 63-61 Purdue lead with 8.9 seconds remaining. Iowa then got the ball to Herrig to the right of the basket for her game-tying shot.
