WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Earlier in the year, Michigan State traveled to West Lafayette and defeated Purdue, but the Boilers returned the favor today at the Big Ten Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich.
It only took four matches for the No. 3-seed Purdue men's tennis team to eliminate No. 6 Michigan State (10-13, 5-6). With the 4-0 victory the Boilermakers move to 15-7 overall in '99 and 8-3 in conference play.
Purdue started things off right by taking the doubles' point. The No. 2 team of senior Cris James and sophomore Jason Marshall beat Ivica Primorac and Francisco Trinidad 8-2, while the Boilers' No. 3 tandem of senior Jamie Gordon and sophomore Dan swan picked up an 8-4 win over Trey Eubanks and Mark Findling. The final match at No. 1 was abandoned when Purdue gained enough wins to take the point.
In singles action, it was the middle of the Purdue line-up that took control. Playing in the No. 2 slot senior Derek Myers defeated Ken Kigongo 6-4, 6-4 and James beat Chris Struck 7-5, 6-3 at No. 3. It was Marshall's win that put the Old Gold and Black over the top. The sophomore beat Primorac 7-5, 6-2. The final three singles matches were also abandoned.
At noon tomorrow the Boilermakers will face No. 7 Northwestern, which picked up an upset 4-3 victory over Michigan to advance. In the regular season, Purdue defeated the Wildcats 5-2.
