Men's Golf Places 17th at NCAA Regionals

May 22, 1999

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Minnesota men's golf team led the NCAA Central Regionals after each day of competition and won the tournament by three strokes over Northwestern today. The Golden Gophers avenged their own three-stroke defeat to the Wildcats in last week's Big Ten tournament. The Purdue Boilermakers finished the 54- hole tournament tied for 17th place with Texas after shooting a team-score of 906 (+42). For the day, the Old Gold and Black fired a respectable score of 298, 14 shots better than yesterday's round. The Boilers finish the season having claimed two team championships this season (Adams Cup of Newport and The Cobra Collegiate) and qualified for regionals for the first time in 10 years.

The two Big Ten schools also featured the tournaments top two golfers in sophomores James McLean of Minnesota and Luke Donald of Northwestern. Defending national champion McLean was the regional medalist with scores of 69-72-71=212 (-4), while Donald finished one stroke behind at -3. Donald was familiar with host Ohio States Scarlet course, having won the Kepler Intercollegiate at even par April 18.

Eight other schools also qualified for the NCAA Championships including third-place Nebraska, Oklahoma State, Houston, Toledo, Illinois, Arkansas, Kansas, and Colorado. Colorado, who finished the second day in 18th place, shot a 290 in the final round to force a playoff with Kent State, who fell from third to a 10th place tie with the Buffaloes after a final-round 309. Colorado beat the Golden Flashes in a sudden death playoff on the par four, 430-yard first hole.

Individually for the Boilers, senior Bert Jones carded the team's low score for the tournament, shooting an 11-over par 227, one shot ahead of sophomores Ryan Miller and Chad Jones. Freshman Lee Williamson tied for 70th place with a 229 and junior Ryan Cate registered Purdue's low round for the day with an even-par 72 to finish tied for 88th place at 233.

The two individuals who will compete at the national championships are Jamie Broce of Ball State and Martin Maritz of Tulsa. Maritz had the tournaments low round after his 67 on the first day, shot a 78 in the second round, and rebounded with a 70 in round three to finish tied in third place with Broce.

The top 10 teams and two individuals in the tournament advance to the NCAA Championships, scheduled for June 2-5 at the Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn.
