Student-Athlete Development

Welcome to Purdue Student-Athlete Development. Our department strives to mold our student-athletes into champions on and off their respective playing fields.  Our goal is to watch hundreds of student-athletes walk off campus after their playing career with a diploma in one hand and an opportunity in the other because of their transformational experience.

Student-Athlete Internships 1

VISION
To provide an all-encompassing life skills student development program that creates a strong foundation for future layers of success that’s linked directly to the enhanced student-athlete experience at Purdue University.  This program, while integrating alumni engagement, will be the vehicle for strengthening leadership, community service, professional and career development and personal enhancement equating to a more holistic individual which leads to heightened preparation for life after sport.

MISSION
In ever-changing national landscape of Intercollegiate Athletics, our mission is to develop champions, advance academic success, strengthen leadership competence, and promote positive student-athlete well-being.

Explore
As freshmen it’s our mission to create a strong foundation for our student athletes.  We want them to discover themselves, find out their talents, understand their potential, find a purpose and locate passions outside of athletics.  We will focus on transitional growth, mental health, financial literacy, sexual assault/domestic violence prevention and basic life skill components that can be built upon over the lifespan of their collegiate experience.

Branding
As sophomores we move into the branding stage.  Here we reinforce the explore stage and start to build the student athletes’ personal brand.  It’s important for our student athletes to be reminded that they are representing not only Purdue University but their representing themselves and their family name as well.  Branding includes the pros and cons of social media, knowledge of transferable toolkit, resume and cover letter building, etiquette workshops and developing the mindset to grow professionally.  In addition, the John R. Wooden Leadership – pyramid of success, will be installed and nurtured through their career.

Connecting
As juniors it’s imperative to clean up and polish resumes as our student athletes begin to receive different experiences such as internships, job shadowing and participating in community growth.  Mock interviews, networking events with local, regional and national organizations and site visits will align with the connecting stage.  Alumni and mentors assist in the process of the job search, mock interviews, and continue the emphasis on leadership.

Champion
In the final year of the student athlete, we’ve helped mold them into a more holistic individual that is prepared for life after sport.  They will have learned everything from self-discovery, how to manage mental health, their diets and finances to being a great leader, companion and role model that can continue to bring great value to the community they choose to reside.  Our student athletes will have been delivered exceptional support services to ensure they are mentally and physically prepared to absorb skill development necessary to maximize their potential as students, leaders, athletes and future employees.

Community Service
Purdue student-athletes will work with over 50 non-profit organizations supporting a
wide variety of missions. It’s our goal to make an $40,000 economic impact and help
our community and the surrounding communities create a better place for all people
to thrive and grow. Click here to learn more about our community service program.

John R. Wooden Leadership Institute
The Wooden Leadership Institute is a vehicle to help the student-athletes grow and develop the tools to become tomorrow’s leaders.  The Wooden Institute will utilize as its foundation, John Wooden’s own Pyramid of Success. Purdue student-athletes will attend both classes and seminars as they focus on each of the strategic building blocks that Coach Wooden thought so valuable.  Click here to read more about the John R. Wooden Leadership Institute.

The Purdue Athletics Student-Athlete Development department will soon be launching the Boilermaker Athlete Network where our current student-athletes will have access to exclusive jobs, internships, resources, networking opportunities and more.  Join this FREE network as a company rep where you will be able to stream-line your jobs and internships in front of our student-athletes.

Please complete this company information link so we can get your company page created in the Boilermaker Athlete Network.  Once your account is created and you’ve completed the questionnaire link, you will be tagged as the company rep and from there you’ll be able to post any open jobs or internships by specific criteria you are looking for in your next hire.

Student-athletes will be able to interact with your company page, see where your job openings are located, and even apply to your jobs through the Boilermaker Athlete Network.  A great benefit to hiring current student-athletes is that they are competitive, team-oriented, focused, driven and so much more.
