Ben Turner joined the Purdue strategic communications office in October of 2010. He is the sport contact for baseball and swimming & diving. He also served as the SID for Purdue women’s soccer from 2010 to 2017.
Turner continues to contribute to Purdue baseball’s radio coverage, serving as the color commentator during games played away from Alexander Field. He served as the play-by-play announcer for the pre-Big Ten weekends from 2011 to 2019. He also maintains the office’s radio equipment that is utilized for baseball, volleyball and women’s basketball.
Turner has helped publicize 10 NCAA championships won by the Purdue divers. He also led the department's publicity of the Olympic medals won by alumni David Boudia (diving), Steele Johnson (diving) and Lauren Sesselmann (soccer). Turner has served as the media relations contact for three Big Ten Swimming & Diving Championships (2016, 2017, 2022) as well as the 2014 Big Ten Women’s Soccer Tournament, which were all held in West Lafayette. Additionally, Purdue's Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center hosted the ACC/Big Ten Challenge all-star meet in November 2018. Purdue baseball also hosted an NCAA Regional in Gary, Indiana, in 2012.
Prior to coming to Purdue, Turner worked in the sports information office at Eastern Illinois from 2003 to 2010. He was hired as a full-time assistant SID in the summer of 2005 after a two-year stint as a graduate assistant. At EIU, he served as the sport contact for baseball, women’s basketball, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, softball and volleyball as well as women’s rugby, tennis and swimming & diving as a GA. He was the play-by-play announcer for women’s basketball from 2003 to 2009.
A native of Elgin, Illinois, Turned earned both of his degrees from Eastern Illinois -- a bachelor’s in journalism in 2003 and a master’s in physical education in 2005. He is the father of a son, Edison. His interests include live music; traveling; geography; trivia; recreational sports like softball, bowling and golf; and watching pro sports. He is a fan of most of the Chicago teams.
