GAMEDAY INFORMATION
Purdue (8-0) at Charlotte (4-3)
Wednesday, March 2 at 4 p.m. ET / C-USA TV Stream
Hayes Stadium / Charlotte, North Carolina
All-Time Series: First Meeting
Probable Pitching Matchup: Wyatt Wendell (R-Jr, RHP) vs. Charlotte's Paxton Thompson (So, RHP)
HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. – Purdue baseball faces its toughest test of its pre-conference schedule when it puts its flawless 8-0 record on the line Wednesday with a midweek visit to the Queen City to take on first-time foe Charlotte.
First pitch at Hayes Stadium is set for 4 p.m. ET. It's game No. 5 of the Boilermakers' eight-game, 10-day trip in the state of North Carolina. Purdue swept Princeton in a four-game set over the weekend and returns to Ting Stadium in Holly Springs for a three-game set with Longwood this weekend.
Charlotte won 40 games last season, earning the No. 2 seed in an NCAA Regional hosted by East Carolina. The 49ers defeated Maryland on day 1 of the Regional and remained competitive in their subsequent losses – 7-5 to ECU and 2-1 to the Terps.
Charlotte hosts Gardner-Webb in its midweek opener Tuesday. The 49ers have wins against Connecticut, USF and West Virginia early this season while also battling nationally ranked Louisville in a one-run loss in the season opener.
THE LAST TIME
• Purdue played a game on a Wednesday: March 4, 2020 at Indiana
• Purdue played a Conference USA Opponent: March 2020 Series at Western Kentucky (Lost 2 of 3)
• Purdue played 5 or more consecutive games in the same state besides Indiana: 2017 Spring Break Trip in California
• Purdue won a non-conference game vs. a Regional qualifier from the year before: February 2019 at Texas
The Boilermakers have racked up 35 stolen bases during their 8-0 start (4.4 per game), ranking second nationally entering the week. Even if Purdue averages just 1.5 stolen bases per game during the remainder of the regular season, it would still break the program record – 106 set in 2000. Purdue's lightning and lightning duo at the top of the lineup – Mike Bolton Jr. and Curtis Washington Jr. – have combined for 13 steals and Evan Albrecht is also a perfect 6 of 6 while batting in the 9-hole.
