WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Despite a career outing from Kayana Traylor, the Purdue women's basketball team could not knock off Big Ten Conference co-leader No. 20 Iowa on Sunday afternoon at Mackey Arena, falling 83-71.
Donning special pink Nike uniforms for the Beat Cancer Pinkout, the Boilermakers (15-10, 6-7) gave the Hawkeyes (20-4, 11-2) strong test. Several players stepped up to make key contributions throughout the game, while Iowa hampered Ae'Rianna Harris, Dominique Oden and Karissa McLaughlin on the offensive end all afternoon.
Traylor powered the Purdue with a career-high 21 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the floor. The sophomore knocked down both of her 3-point attempts and went 7-of-10 at the line. Jenelle Grant finished in double figures for the first time in seven games with 12 points off the bench, going 5-for-5 on field goals and 2-for-2 from behind the arc.
Fatou Diagne chipped in seven points over 17 minutes of work to go along with a career-high and game-high 14 boards, the first double-digit rebounding game of her career.
The Boilermakers shot 41.7% from the field and 44.4% (8-for-18) from long range. On the opposite end of the floor, the Hawkeyes were efficient on offense, behind a 58.9% shooting clip, including 46 points in the paint.
After trailing by six at the break and as many as 14 in the third quarter, the Boilermakers continued to battle back in the second half. Traylor's traditional 3-point play with 2:53 to play in the third sparked a 16-6 run over the next 4:13 to cut the gap down to two at 64-62. Iowa responded to the run with a 12-1 stretch, eventually opening the lead to 16 late in the fourth.
Needing a jump in offensive production in the second half, the Boilermakers were 14-of-28 from the field in the final 20 minutes. Traylor dropped 15 second-half points, as Purdue tallied 22 of their 26 points during that span.
