WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue softball team leads off its 2020 campaign with the FAU First Pitch Classic in Boca Raton, Florida from Feb. 7-9.
Purdue will face Northern Illinois, Bethune-Cookman, Indiana State and host Florida Atlantic during opening weekend. Purdue's first contest will be against the Northern Illinois Huskies at 11:15 a.m. on Friday, with double-headers slated for the first two days of competition.
The Boilermakers look to continue their success from last year coming off a 34-win season, the most for a Purdue team since 2008. The team secured a position in the National Invitational Softball Championships (NISC) making it the first postseason appearance since 2009.
Kasey Wilhoit returns as a sophomore following 2019 All-Big Ten Defensive Team honors. In her breakout season for the Boilermakers, Wilhoit started 59 games in the outfield and ranks third on the team in batting average (.322), hits (58) and RBI (35) to go along with 31 runs this season. Wilhoit also registered key hits for the Boilermakers, knocking in the game-winning runs against Iowa and Penn State. Defensively, Wilhoit is tied for first with a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage with 68 putouts and three assists.
Sophomore Rachel Becker seeks to build to her resume in the 2020 season. Becker led Purdue in hits (67), runs (48) walks (41) and on-base % (.472) and returns as the team's leader in batting average (.354) and stolen bases (7).
Redshirt junior Sydney Bates is coming off a 13-win campaign in 2019, the most wins by a Boilermaker pitcher since 2016. Bates also held opponents to a .256 batting average and secured a 3.52 ERA which ranked her among the top 20 pitchers in the Big Ten. Purdue also has nine new faces including junior transfer Skye Webb (Georgia Tech), sophomore transfer Kenzie Bolin (Utah State) and seven freshmen.
