WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Purdue men's tennis team picked up its first win of the season at the Arthur Ashe Invitational, defeating host Army West Point 4-3. The Boilermakers bounced back from a loss to Harvard on Saturday to more to 1-1 on the season.
Purdue started the day strong the opening doubles point. Julian Saborio and Athell Bennett cruised to a 6-3 win at No. 1 over A.J. Woodman and Myles Conlin. Sebastian Welch and Mateo Julio teamed up to take down Thomas Lake and Nikita Larichev at No. 2 7-6(6) to seal the point.
In singles action, the top of the order came through to seal the win. Bennett edged Conlin 6-4, 7-6(8) from the top spot. Julio picked up a win at No. 2 against Diego Huttepain, 6-3, 6-4. Raupuk also delivered a victory from the No. 3 spot against Larichev in a 6-4, 6-3 decision.
The Boilermakers will have a quick turnaround for their next match. Purdue will travel to Notre Dame for a 4 p.m. match Monday.
