WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue men's tennis junior Athell Bennett earned his first career all-conference honor Monday, being named Second-Team All-Big Ten. A career-best season saw him break into the rankings twice, and featured several upset victories along the way, following in the footsteps of Gergely Madarasz who earned the honor the past two years.
The All-Big Team honors were voted on by the conference coaches and revealed during the tournament where Bennett upset the highest-ranked opponent of his career.
This season Bennett earned a 13-6 record in singles, accompanied by an 11-8 record in doubles. He currently owns his highest career singles ranking at No. 73, coming on the heels of an undefeated weekend in both singles and doubles at the Big Ten Tournament, including an upset over No. 10 Aleks Krovacevic of Illinois. Previously Bennett's highest ranking of the season was No. 108 after starting the season on a four-match win streak.
Bennett defeated three ranked opponents on the season, including No. 61 Josip Krstanovic of Minnesota 6-2, 6-3. He went 8-2 in Big Ten play, including a six-match win streak and his career record stands at 31-13 over the last two years.
Senior Dominik Sochurek was named an All-Big Ten Sportmanship honoree.
