COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 9 nationally-ranked Purdue men's cross country team ran to a fourth-place team finish Sunday at the Big Ten Championships on the Ohio State Golf Course, while the women's team produced 11th-place (302 points).
Led by Jaret Carpenter's fifth place finish with a time of 24:03.5, the men scored 82 points, a feat no other Purdue team has accomplished since 1985 (73).
Carpenter also finished with first-team All-Big Ten honors. Curt Ekstein, finishing eighth with a time of 24:10.6 and Brody Smith finishing 11th overall with a time of 24:19.9, were both awarded with second-team All-Big Ten honors. Purdue was the only team in the race to score three runners in the top 11 of the field.
The fourth Boilermaker to cross the line was Bailey McIntire, who finished with a time of 24:40.2 for 24th-place, followed by Tyler Bowling in 35th with a time of 24:49.6.
The Boilermakers followed each other closely through 4,000-meters until Carpenter made his move, rising from ninth-place to fourth within the next 1,000 meters. Ekstein and Smith were on one another's heals when they hit the final push in the remaining 2k.
On the women's side, freshman Meagan Hathaway made a late race push into 34th-place and closed out the race with a 21:13.3 effort. Hathaway was the highest finishing Purdue women's runner.
Megan Slamkowski was the next Boilermaker to cross the finish line with a time of 21:28.1, finishing 55th. The next three Boilermakers raced in a pack the entire race. Jenna Halderman finished with a 22:08.2 time followed closely by teammate Susan Hubbard in 22:09.8 to bring home 79th- and 80th-place for Purdue. Ellie Tate finished with a time of 22:13.0 to round out the top 5 Boilermakers, securing 83rd place in the championships.
In two weeks, the Boilermakers will return to action in Madison, Wisconsin, on Nov. 15 for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional, where Purdue will look to send runners on to the national championships.
