WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue wrestling team officially begins its 2019-20 competition schedule Saturday, heading to the Michigan State Open. The Boilermakers will take a squad of 20 attached wrestlers set to compete in the Open Division, which will feature a host of top teams from across the country.
"We're excited to finally get the chance to compete against someone else," said Purdue head coach Tony Ersland. "The guys have put in a tremendous off-season, training and improving their skills, and we're ready to see where we stack up."
The Michigan State Open will feature one of its largest fields in the event's history, hosting approximately 225 entries in both the Open and Freshman/Sophomore Divisions. The Boilermakers are 1-of-14 NCAA Division I teams scheduled to compete, a field that includes five other Big Ten Conference teams and a trio of squads in InterMat's preseason top-20 tournament rankings.
Saturday's field could consist of as many as 40 individually ranked wrestlers, with the most potent brackets standing at 125, 133 and 157 pounds. The official tournament entries and brackets will be available shortly after weigh-ins, which are scheduled for 7:30 a.m. ET.
Action is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. and will go until completion. Due to tournament size, Michigan State anticipates at least 10 hours of wrestling and a finish time in the mid to late evening.
