WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Justin Walker Jr. and Jake Parr connected for home runs to power the Gold Team to a game 3 victory, but a walk-off single by the Black Team's Justin Fugitt ultimately decided what proved to the rubber game of Purdue baseball's Black & Gold Series at Alexander Field.
After the Gold Team was declared a 5-3 winner in the 4 ½-inning game 3, Friday's game that was tied 5-5 in the middle of the sixth inning was resumed and completed. In the bottom of the seventh, Tanner Haston doubled and scored the series-deciding run on Fugitt's walk-off single in the 6-5 final.
The Black Team earned the right to dine on steak at Saturday's postgame meal.
Freshman Jett Jackson worked three innings of one-hit ball as the Gold Team's game 3 starting pitcher. The lone batter he allowed to reach base, via a single by Fugitt, was erased moments later on a 5-4-3 double play.
Walker hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Parr connected for a solo shot as part of three-run bottom of the fourth that ultimately decided the series finale.
The Black Team mounted a rally in the fifth inning thanks to six productive plate appearances. Four walks coupled with an RBI single from Bryce Bonner and sacrifice fly by Fugitt led to the three-run frame.
Skyler Hunter doubled in front of Walker's home run. Jack Firestone delivered a two-out RBI single in the fourth inning after fellow freshman Zander Adams had singled and stolen second base.
Cory Brooks regrouped and retired nine of the final 10 batters he faced after surrendering the first-inning home run to Walker.
The Boilermakers will host an all ages Halloween Bash at Alexander Field on Tuesday, Oct. 29 (6-8 p.m.). The free event will feature a three-inning scrimmage followed by on-field trick-or-treating. Feb. 14 to 16 is the season-opening weekend of the 2020 college baseball campaign. Purdue will open with a four-game series vs. Hofstra in Sanford, Florida.
