MADISON, Wis. – The Purdue cross country team competed in one of the toughest meets in the nation with 40 nationally ranked programs converging at the Nuttycombe Invitational. The No. 11 ranked Purdue men's team secured sixth place (255 points) while the women placed 35th (892 points).
With the finish, the No. 11 men's team out-ran No. 7 Oregon and No. 8 Portland. Additionally, the Boilermakers were the fastest Big Ten team to compete at Nuttycombe.
Jaret Carpenter led Purdue once again, clocking in at 23:59.9 for 22nd-place. In total, three Boilermakers snagged top 30 finishes, with Brody Smith (24:03.4) and Curt Eckstein (24:04.9) placing 26th and 29th-place, respectively.
Through the 2,000-meter mark, the men held 28th-place, but rocketed to seventh overall by the 4,000-meter check-in. Smith advanced 16 places before crossing the finish line, but Blake Selm (149th-place, 24:56.6) covered the most ground as he passed 17 runners ahead of the finish.
The women were led by Jenna Halderman, who rose a team-best 14 spots by the end of the race. Halderman was clocked at 21:30.9 for 134th-place. Close behind her in 148th-place was Megan Slamkowski (21:39.0) and Isabelle Sparreo (195th-place, 22:02.1).
One regular-season meet remains for the Boilermakers before the Big Ten Championships at Ohio State (11/3). Next Friday, Purdue will travel to Indianapolis for the Butler Open.
