WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue's lightweights packed a one-two punch before top-ranked Penn State took over, winning the next six weights, to beat the Boilermakers 30-10 at Holloway Gymnasium on Friday. Despite the loss, No. 19 Purdue (5-6, 2-3 B1G) received an upset from Ben Thornton and Devin Schroder moved to 5-0 in conference matches.

Thornton was businesslike while rising to the occasion, as the 18th-ranked Boilermaker upset PSU's No. 13 Roman Bravo-Young 7-3 at 133 pounds. Thornton struck early in the opening frame for the first takedown and added an escape after injury time was taken by Bravo-Young. The lead grew for Thornton in the second period thanks to another escape and a takedown that proved patience pays off.

"I'm feeling great," the Stoddard, Wisconsin, native said. "[As a wrestler] you have to have a short memory, especially in the Big Ten season because every opponent you are going to have is going to be tough. You can't dwell on the losses and you can't dwell on the wins either. This is a good confidence booster; the more you can build your mental aspect of the game is also very important in the Big Ten season. Now it is looking forward to Minnesota."

Thornton (15-4) stepped out on the mat following a 6-1 decision from Schroder at 125 pounds. A pair of takedowns and a two-point nearfall lifted the redshirt sophomore over his Nittany Lion opponent, Devin Schnupp. The win for Schroder (17-6) was his fifth in a row while remaining undefeated in Big Ten duals.

Max Lyon contributed bonus points for Purdue, turning in a 12-4 major decision of Franny Bisono at 184 pounds. Lyon's fourth major decision of the season saw him take Bisono down five times and rack up 2:21 of riding time. The sophomore hailing from Dyersville, Iowa, also won his fifth straight match and took his season mark to 17-7.

The Boilermakers will break from their trend of Friday nights at Holloway, with just one dual next weekend. They'll travel to Minneapolis to take on Minnesota at 2 p.m. ET on Feb. 3.
