WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue's Dylan Lydy will vie for a spot on the U.S. Junior Freestyle World Team at the UWW Men's Freestyle Junior World Team Trials on Sunday. Competition from the Irving Convention Center in Irving, Texas, is set to get underway at 10:30 a.m. ET. The winners in each weight class earn the right to represent the U.S. at the 2016 UWW Junior World Championships in Macon, France, in August. Athletes competing in the UWW Junior World Team Trials were born 1996-1998.

Lydy, who redshirted his first year at Purdue, will wrestle under the Boilermaker RTC. The Indianapolis, Indiana, native is coming off of an eighth-place finish at 74 kg at the UWW Junior Freestyle National Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada, on May 1.

After dropping his opening match, Lydy stormed through wrestlebacks, posting four decisions and winning another by medical forfeit. During his run, Lydy outscored his opponents 34-15. He began wrestlebacks with a 10-1 outing vs. Casey Dobson of the Argo Wrestling Club and used an eight-point second period to edge Dalton Clark of the Minnesota Storm 10-9.

A 4-0 shutout of Collin Boylan of the Buffalo Valley RTC, followed by a 10-5 decision of Drexel's Dakota Greene and the recipient of a medical forfeit from Titan Mercury's Joe Smith advanced Lydy into the consolation quarterfinals.

Kimball Bastian of the Wolverine Wrestling Club brought Lydy's run to an end with a 4-2 setback, sending him into the seventh-place match. Iowa's Joey Gunther took the ensuing match with an 11-0 technical fall.

Although Lydy's performance in Las Vegas earned him a spot in the World Team Trials, he had secured a spot in the event in August 2015 courtesy of his fourth-place finish at the ASICS/Vaughn Junior Freestyle National Championships. Lydy went 5-2 at the tournament, held in late-July in Fargo, North Dakota.
