LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Robbie Hummel's fall-away 3-pointer was off the mark and the Gold team withstood a rally by the Black team for an 86-84 decision in Purdue's alumni game Saturday.

Nearly 4,500 fans were in attendance at Lafayette Jefferson High School to witness yet another classic between the two teams.

Gold surged out early behind the hot shooting of Ryne Smith and Rapheal Davis, taking a 39-21 lead late in the first half. Black surged back behind the tenacity of Kenneth Lowe and David Teague, trimming the margin to 41-37 at halftime.

Black would take its first lead of the game on a Matt Waddell 3-pointer at 64-62 with just over 10 minutes left, but Gold answered with a 9-0 run to take a 71-64 advantage, setting up a wild finish.

For the Gold team, Sandi Marcius paced the Boilermakers with 18 points, while Smith had 17. Davis had 13 points and Travis Carroll scored 11.

Teague led the Black team with 20 points, while Hummel added 16. Brian Cardinal scored 13 points, while Lowe had 12.

The event is held every two years and roughly 40 past players attended this year's festivities.
