WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Redshirt freshman Ashley Evans will be representing Purdue and the United States as a member of the U.S. Collegiate National Team's China Tour roster.
The squad, which is part of USA Volleyball's High Performance pipeline, will train and compete in a series of six matches in China between June 13 and June 25. After a brief training session in the United States, the team will land in Shanghai on June 16. The team is expected to play three matches in Changxing City June 17-21 with the Chinese Women's Junior National team and a professional club team as opponents. The squad will then fly to Beijing to train and compete June 21-26 against the Chinese Women's U-23 National Team and a professional club team.
In 2014, Evans averaged 2.34 digs per set, second most on the Purdue team, while adding 1.19 kills per set, 40 assists and 18 aces. She recorded two double-doubles, posting double-digit digs in 12 matches and double-digit kills twice. The Liberty Township, Ohio, native, made good on 97 percent of her 731 serve-reception chances as the team's primary passer. The Academic All-Big Ten honoree led the team in digs four times and blocks twice, while hitting .250 or better in 12 matches.
Evans is one of two setters on the team along with Mackenzie Dagostino (Florida) and one of six Big Ten players on the squad. Middle blockers Abby Cole (Michigan) and Hannah Tapp (Minnesota), outside hitter Sarah Wilhite (Minnesota) and liberos Tiffany Morales (Michigan) and Taylor Morey (Wisconsin) also will represent the conference.
The team will be coached by Jason Watson, head coach at Arizona State. Assistant coaches are Katelyn Panzau from Maryland-Baltimore County and Abbi Hayes from Wingate University.
The roster includes five players who will be seniors in college in 2015, along with four juniors-to-be and three sophomores-to-be.
Athletes were selected through the U.S. Women's National Team Open Tryouts held Feb. 20-22 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The College National Team - China team is one of three programs within USA Volleyball's High Performance U.S. Collegiate National Team program. USA Volleyball announced the 12-player roster for the World University Games earlier this week. An additional 36 players, which will be announced next week, will train and compete in conjunction with the 2015 USA Volleyball Girls' Junior National Championships in June in New Orleans.
