WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - With the 2014 Purdue football season on the horizon - the opener is Saturday at noon against Western Michigan at Ross-Ade Stadium - here are 14 fun facts for Boilermaker fans:
1. The South End Zone Patio debuts and is available to football season-ticket holders and Purdue students who have purchased the VIP Card. It opens 90 minutes before kickoff and closes at the end of each game.
2. Homecoming and Varsity P Club Weekend is Sept. 27 against Iowa. Dave Butz, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame Class of 2014, will be honored, as will the 1964 and 1989 Boilermaker football squads.
3. Four non-working speakers among the cluster of 12 located in the south end zone scoreboard have been replaced, and the entire system has been rebalanced to better distribute the sound and volume throughout the stadium.
4. Mobile ticket delivery is available for all fans with a smartphone device.
5. All fountain sodas are refillable in two souvenir cup sizes - 22 and 32 ounces - as are coffee and hot chocolate in a 16-ounce souvenir travel mug.
6. The video board will showcase fan interaction from social media, primarily via Twitter and Instagram.
7. A new PurdueSports.com Gameday LIVE mobile application is coming.
8. The Boilermakers will host their Hammer Down Cancer Game on Oct. 11 against Michigan State.
9. A distributed antenna system (DAS) has been deployed at various points along the concourse level designed to improve cell phone coverage. A permanent - and better - solution is scheduled for 2015.
10. A new 85-ounce refillable souvenir tub of Purdue alum Orville Redenbacher popcorn is available.
11. Military Appreciation Day is Nov. 8 against Wisconsin.
12. Both the Boilermaker Crossing and 211° Session return, as does the popular "Countdown to Kickoff" radio show.
13. A new feature in the official game program is "Tim's Take," with radio play-by-play announcer Tim Newton's thoughts on the Boilermakers.
14. The "P" logo on the players' helmets for the Iowa game on Sept. 27 will feature more than 200 pictures of fans submitted by season-ticket holders.
