WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - No. 21 Purdue (2-1-1) defeated Texas Tech, 4-0, Friday afternoon at the Varsity Soccer Complex, snapping a short two-match winless streak. The loss was Tech's first of the season (2-1).
The Boilermaker offense came back to life in a major way after being absent in a 4-0 loss to San Diego State and during a scoreless tie at Cincinnati. For the second straight week, Purdue received four goals from four different players.
Purdue's first two goals came off set plays. At the two-minute mark, a diving header by Kira Bilecky off a 30-yard Jill Sarbaugh free kick gave the Boilermakers their first goal in week. Minutes later Parrissa Eyorokon, Sylvia Forbes and Amber Henkle combined forces to covert a corner kick opportunity to put the Boilermakers up for good at 2-0.
Eyorokon received a short corner pass from Jill Sarbaugh and sent it into the 18-yard box, where Forbes headed it down to Henkle. Standing near post, Henkle booted the ball off the bottom of the crossbar and over the line. The goal was the first of Henkle's three-year career.
"The offense performed today the way I always expect it to," said head coach Rob Klatte. "We could have easily had two or three more goals. Our forwards were more mobile than the last couple of matches and we were very dangerous on set plays."
Eyorokon provided a second assist in the 25th minute, threading a pass to Sarbaugh through traffic. Sarbaugh maintained control of the ball despite being accosted by a pair of Red Raider defensive backs as she ran towards the net.
Purdue's scoring run was capped in the 57th minute when Kalie Grambeau connected with team captain Rebecca Robison. The final goal originated with a deep throw-in along the far side, which made its way to Grambeau, who dumped it back to Robison for the score. Robison one-timed the shot from the top of the 18-yard box.
Purdue's defense was equally superb, holding Texas Tech to just 10 shots, four of which were on goal. Seven of Texas Tech's shot were recorded in the second half while the Boilermakers were playing a majority of their bench. Overall, Klatte used 12 substitutes.
Starter Lauren Mason picked up the victory without having to make a save. Redshirt freshman Jenny Bradfisch played the final 45 minutes and made four saves.
Purdue returns to home action Sunday at 1 p.m., playing host to the Baylor Bears. The match can be heard over the AM dial at 1410 WLAS and over the World Wide Web at purduesports.com.
