WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's soccer team defeated the Georgetown Hoyas, 3-1, today in the first round of the third annual Boilermaker Challenge Cup.
"I think that today was a quality win and I was very happy with the chances that we created," said Purdue head coach Rob Klatte. "We defended well, in parts, but we still need to get better at our defensive organization. We should start putting pressure on ourselves to stay with the ball and keep our defensive shape. We got torn apart at moments, but we will continue to take one game and one win at a time. This was a great start for us with this win today."
The game was very physical from the beginning, as Purdue totaled 16 fouls to the Hoyas' 21. Georgetown also lost an assistant coach and a player to red cards late in the second half, along with two yellow cards earlier in the game.
The Boilermakers scored early, taking the 1-0 lead off an Annette Kent goal from the top left of the 18-yard box. Kent, a sophomore and the co-leading scorer of the 2000 campaign, dropped the ball in off a serve from sophomore Jennie Moppert from the right side of the box.
Purdue continued to make it an exciting game for the largest home crowd for at a women's soccer game in school history, when it scored a second goal at 58:04. After holding the lead at halftime, the Boilermakers' Krystal Pepper found freshman Lauren Sesselmann open for the cross and the header. This was Sesselmann's first goal as a Boilermaker.
However, the Hoyas weren't ready to give up were able to find a hole in the Purdue defense. With lots of substitution changes on both sides, it wasn't easy, but Georgetown netted a goal of their own at the 72:26 mark as Lauren Eyler received the pass from Karin Ostrander.
Just when it started to get close again, the Boilermakers were able to find that same hole in the Hoyas' defense that Georgetown had found in theirs. At 78:47, Sesselmann again was open on the top, left side of the box and chipped the ball in. Junior Elise Berry and senior Katie Redmond earned the assists.
Using practically its entire bench, Purdue finished the game with 17 shots verses the Hoyas' seven. The Boilermakers also out cornered Georgetown, recording five to the Hoyas' none.
Purdue senior goalkeeper Elizabeth Boldt tallied the start and saved one shot with no goals allowed for the first half. At the break, junior keeper Jocelyn Cavalier, came into the goal and netted four saves while allowing one goal during her 45 minutes.
The Boilermakers will return to the field on Sunday for the championship game of the Boilermaker Challenge Cup, as they look to take home their third straight title. Purdue will take on the SMU Lady Mustangs and game time is 12:30 p.m. The Boilermakers play on the East Field of the Varsity Soccer Complex at the corner of McCormick Road and Cherry Lane.
In the first game of the tournament, Miami (Ohio) fell to the SMU Lady Mustangs, 2-1, in the first sudden victory overtime period and advance to the consolation game to play the Hoyas of Georgetown. Their game time is also 12:30 p.m., as they will play on the West Field of the Varsity Soccer Complex.
The Lady Mustangs scored quickly in the first half as Lorrie Tipton found the back of the net at 20:57 on a pass from Sarah Harvey.
Miami answered in the 67th minute when Danielle Berkemeier shot from the left side of the box and scored on a pass from Shaedyn Cousino to send the game to overtime.
